Consumer Units

What is a Consumer Unit?

You may have been calling it a fuse board or fuse box however the correct terminology is consumer unit. The consumer unit is where all your circuits in your house are powered from including your sockets, lights, immersion heater and many more things. The consumer unit is designed provide protection from an electric shock and minimise the risk of an electrical fire in your home. The newer the edition of consumer unit the better protection you will have.

How do you know if it is time for a consumer unit upgrade?

As a general rule of thumb you should have your electrical installations checked every 10 years or if you are in a rented property this should be every five years. It's also a great idea to have your electrics checked by a qualified electrician when moving into a new house to assess whether the consumer unit is still keeping you safe and functioning as it should.

As a minimum requirement we install an 18th edition consumer unit integrated with RCBOs and an SPD. If preferred or required we can also install AFDDs or AFDD combined with RCBO.
